Permits and council requirements

Standard 10m² pods are designed to avoid building permits, outbuildings under 10m² generally don’t require one, and a non-habitable pod is typically classified as a Class 10a structure. If you plan to use your pod for permanent sleeping, it usually becomes a habitable room and will require full council approval and a planning permit.
Placement should always respect local council regulations around boundary setbacks. Approval timeframes vary from one council to the next in some areas a building permit can be processed within 10 to 15 business days, while larger structures that do require a permit take around 8 weeks.
